Research & Development

Our Mission
Our mission in Research & Development is to have a best in class R&D organization with lean processes translating the needs of our customers into competitive products, services and processes retaining the technological leadership.
We live an open innovative culture with open eyes and open minds, implementing the best ideas available, regardless of where they come from.

RHI  Technology Center  Leoben
Over the last decade, the RHI Technology Center has evolved into the refractory competence center of the Group. In addition to research and development, the site is also home to global production control comprising the quality management, technology, logistics and production controlling departments. Donawitz contract business support and parts of steel and  nonferrous metals marketing are also based in Leoben.

The Technology Center offers committed employees from a wide range of  educational backgrounds a creative environment to ensure RHI’s technology leadership in the refractories business.
Graduates of many different fields of study such as ceramics, mineralogy, petrology, physics, metallurgy of steel and nonferrous metals, material sciences, process technology and chemistry work in research and development.

Competitive Edge through Innovation
With its strategic claim “We lead the Industry!”, RHI has also committed to modern innovation management, i.e. the conscious creation of innovation processes and their framework conditions. The group-wide systematic innovation process supports the planning, management and control of turning ideas into marketable innovations.

Short-term requirements in the customer industries as well as long-term trends among key customers are observed continuously and registered by the marketing departments of the business units. R&D and the innovation department use the findings to derive and define new research assignments. The innovation management department continuously collects new ideas for product and system developments, which are then evaluated at so-called Gate meetings and integrated into the R&D program. The global R&D network plays a key role in this process.

Effective Research& Development
RHI cooperates closely with public and private research institutions in Austria and abroad. We partner up with customers and universities in industrial competence centers.R&D projects are commissioned by the steel, nonferrous  metals, cement/lime, glass, and environment/energy/chemicals business units, by central engineering and by the production plants of RHI. In addition to material research, which studies the interaction of thermal, physical and chemical attacks on the refractory materials, and process research, the development of new  simulation models based on fluid dynamic and finite element methods is a crucial focus of the research activities.

Numbers of employees
More than 170 experts from 12 countries, of which slightly more than 30% are women.

Global network
The most important scientific cooperation partners are the University of Leoben, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Joanneum Research, the University of Graz and the Graz University of Technology, the Vienna University of Technology, the Slovak Academy of Sciences, McGill University in Canada and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Germany. RHI also works closely with technology leaders in the steel industry such as voestalpine Stahl Donawitz, voestalpine Stahl Linz, Böhler Edelstahl and Primetals Technologies at competence centers promoted by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency.
